Alison Goldfrapp has released a new single, ‘Sound & Light’, ahead of her forthcoming album Flux, due 15th August via her own label, A.G. Records.
Written in Sweden at the start of 2024, the track is rooted in a moment of long-awaited personal magic. “I’d been chasing the Northern Lights for years,” Alison explains. “I’d gone to Finland, Iceland and Norway but never managed to catch them.”
That night, having just written a song about them, she finally saw the lights dancing over Southern Sweden, “almost like she had summoned them through song”.
Sonically, ‘Sound & Light’ is as lush as its title suggests. Co-produced with Swedish artist Stefan Storm (Sound of Arrows) and featuring strings from Davide Rossi, it’s a sleek, cinematic piece of synth-pop. Alison’s voice glides across lines like “a change in the alchemy” and “emerald ribbons”, capturing what she calls “the excitement of an open vista and wanting to embrace a new feeling of emotional freedom”.
It follows the sci-fi shimmer of ‘Find Xanadu’ and the warped hyper-reality of ‘Reverberotic’: two tracks that helped establish Flux as a bold continuation of Alison’s solo journey. Where 2023’s The Love Invention brought her back into the pop sphere as a solo artist after decades fronting Goldfrapp, Flux pushes that even further: more experimental, more expansive, and perhaps more personal.
Alison launched A.G. Records last year and has continued to operate as both writer and producer across her solo work. Her shift into independence hasn’t diluted her reach; she recently supported Scissor Sisters on their arena tour, played headline slots at Somerset House and Glastonbury, and continues to blend avant-garde pop with striking visuals.
Flux will be released in partnership with Absolute Label Services. The album is set to showcase some of her strongest hooks since Supernature and some of her most vulnerable writing to date.
