Arctic Monkeys, Loyle Carner, Olivia Dean among nominees for Mercury Prize 2023

Arctic Monkeys, Raye and Young Fathers are among those nominated for this year’s Mercury Prize, as Alex Turner equals the record with his sixth nomination for the award.

Loyle Carner, Ezra Collective, Fred Again, J Hus, Jockstrap, Jessie Ware, Olivia Dean, Shygirl and Irish outfit Lankum are the others shortlisted for the award, which recognises the best British and Irish albums from the year.  Set up in 1992, whoever wins will follow on from Little Simz, who was recognised for her album, Sometimes I Might Be An Introvert in 2022. Arctic Monkeys won the award in 2006 for their debut album, Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not. Nominations also came Favourite Worst Nightmare (2007), AM (2013), Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino (2017) and now for The Car

Turner was also nominated for his 2008 solo effort, The Last Shadow Puppets, meaning he ties Radiohead’s Thom Yorke with six Mercury Prize nominations.  Rappers Loyle Carner and J Hus both receive their second nominations.  Raye’s My 21st Century Blues sees her acknowledged for the first time, while Fred Again’s Actual Life 3 (January 1 – September 9 2022) sees the DJ’s rapid rise continue.  Ware is back in contention for the award with her fifth album, That! Feels Good!, 11-years after her last nomination.  This year’s winner will be announced at a ceremony in London on Thursday 7 September.
