Barry Can’t Swim has released a new edition of the long-running Late Night Tales compilation series, presenting a 20-track mix that explores the influences and musical obsessions behind his work.
Available now digitally as well as on CD and vinyl, the release marks the first new Late Night Tales instalment in more than five years and launches the compilation brand’s 25th anniversary celebrations.
The mix moves fluidly across genres, combining classic house selections with atmospheric deep cuts and more experimental material. Among the highlights are Lance DeSardi’s ‘The Power Of Suggestion’, a remix of Factory Floor by Daniel Avery, and the hazy electronics of Freddy da Stupid. Elsewhere, more reflective moments arrive through tracks such as ‘The Lacemaker’ by This Mortal Coil.
Barry also contributes several exclusive pieces to the compilation. These include an unreleased track titled ‘Sometimes I Feel So Alone’, originally written during the sessions for his debut album, as well as lead single ‘Chala (My Soul Is On A Loop)’. The mix also features a reinterpretation of ‘Ferdinand Magellan’, originally recorded by Felt in 1986, and an exclusive edit of ‘Yves’ by Superpitcher.
Reflecting on the project, Barry described the invitation as a milestone moment. “I was absolutely buzzing when I got asked to do Late Night Tales. It’s such a significant thing for me. The series works with artists I really admire, so it felt like a massive privilege to be part of it.”
He explained that the compilation allowed him to showcase music he rarely plays in DJ sets. “I’ve got a playlist called ‘Barry Can’t Curate’ where I keep tracks I love but don’t necessarily fit on a dancefloor. Late Night Tales felt like the perfect place to share those.”
The producer, born Joshua Mainnie and raised in Edinburgh, first developed his musical instincts through piano and band performances before moving into electronic production. That background helps explain the stylistic breadth of the compilation, which moves from club-focused selections into more introspective territory.
In recent years Barry Can’t Swim has rapidly become one of the most prominent new names in UK electronic music. His debut album When Will We Land? surpassed 100 million streams and earned a shortlist place for the Mercury Prize in 2024. Follow-up album Loner, released in 2025 on Ninja Tune, reached the UK Top 10 and topped the Dance Chart.
The DJ and producer has also built a reputation as a compelling live performer, highlighted by a sold-out headline show at All Points East and a large-scale curated event at The Warehouse Project.
Barry Can’t Swim’s Late Night Tales compilation is out now.
