The Official Charts Company have revealed the biggest albums and singles of the year, with no major surprises – which is arguably the nature of releases that are so popular they’re ubiquitous. Miley Cyrus’ massive disco-inflected hit ‘Flowers’ comes in as the top-ranking song of the year. The lead single from the pop star’s eighth studio album, Endless Summer Vacation, the track has broken an inordinate number of records, including being the fastest track to one billion Spotify streams. Both RAYE and SZA have benefitted from viral TikTok hits, with their respective tracks ‘Escapism’ (featuring 070 Shake) and ‘Kill Bill’, ranking second and third. Taylor Swift’s ‘Anti-Hero’ and Harry Styles’ ‘As It Was’, both massive hits last year, are still having success in 2023, coming in at fifth and ninth respectively. Meanwhile, in the albums race, The Weeknd might have been almost universally criticised for his performances in HBO’s The Idol, but he’s still going strong in music, with his second greatest hits album The Highlights ranked as the biggest album of 2023 so far. Swift and Styles are still going exceptionally strong, with Midnights at second and Harry’s House coming in third. There’s space for more golden oldies and other greatest hits albums among the best-performing LPs of 2023. Fresh from his blockbuster Glastonbury headline set, Elton John’s Diamonds album comes in fifth, whilst Fleetwood Mac’s 50 Years – Don’t Stop is currently in ninth place. Lewis Capaldi’s latest album Broken By Desire To Be Heavenly Sent, meanwhile, might rank as the tenth biggest album so far this year, but that’s an exceptionally impressive achievement considering the album only arrived in May, earning the Scottish singer the biggest opening week of his career and the biggest first week for an album of 2023 to date. Anyhow, that’s enough rambling – here are the rankings you want to see. Biggest songs of 2023 so far – see the Official Charts Company site for the full Top 40 here.
