London indie art-rock outfit Flat Party have shared their new double A-side ‘C4mGrrl’ and ‘Mother’s Boy’, arriving a year after the band’s acclaimed 2024 EP It’s All Been Done Before, as well as their self-titled debut EP released earlier that same year.
‘C4mGrrl’ is a charged, synth-driven look at the messy overlap between online intimacy and real-world relationships. Written by frontman Jack Lawther, the track follows a man who becomes emotionally entangled with a cam girl, told with a clarity and unflinching honesty that cuts straight to the bone.
Speaking on its creation, Lawther said the song grew from its chorus lyrics before evolving into a commentary on porn addiction, a subject he notes is rarely discussed publicly.
Along with its partner track ‘Mother’s Boy’, the release represents a moment of looseness and experimentation for the band. Lawther points to Tyler, The Creator’s ‘IGOR’S THEME’ and Crack Cloud’s album Red Mile as touchpoints, reflecting the track’s bold entrance and collaborative vocal interplay. Flat Party lean into theatricality once again, although here it sits alongside something rawer and more exposed, allowing their storytelling instincts to push against the distorted, flamboyant textures that shaped their early releases.
“These songs are weird little tangents off what we have been doing,” Lawther said. “We don’t even play them live at the moment because our keyboard is broken, but we liked them, so we wanted them out. We’ve been heading in a different direction lately, which might confuse some people, but it feels exciting.”
Flat Party’s momentum has been steady since It’s All Been Done Before, praised by DIY Magazine, Far Out Magazine, Dork, The Line of Best Fit and whynow, alongside airplay support from Huw Stephens, Steve Lamacq and Radio X. The band’s reputation as one of the country’s most electrifying live acts continues to grow, with recent tours supporting English Teacher, Courting, Opus Kink, FEET and Goat Girl.
‘C4mGrrl’ and ‘Mother’s Boy’ are out now, released 19th November. Flat Party close out the year with a show at The George Tavern in London on 28th November.
