Florence + The Machine have released a new single, ‘Sympathy Magic’, alongside a video directed by longtime collaborator Autumn de Wilde. The song arrives ahead of the band’s sixth album Everybody Scream, due on 31st October.
Written and produced with Danny L. Harle and Aaron Dessner, ‘Sympathy Magic’ was first performed on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon earlier this week. It’s the final preview from Everybody Scream, following the title track and ‘One of the Greats’, both of which earned widespread praise on release.
The album was written and recorded by Florence Welch over the past two years with a small group of collaborators including Harle, Dessner, Mark Bowen of IDLES and Mitski. According to Welch, the record reflects a period of personal upheaval and recovery following major surgery during her Dance Fever tour. Her experiences led her into what she calls “spiritual mysticism, witchcraft and folk horror,” as she explored the limits of her body and what it means to be healed.
Across twelve tracks, Everybody Scream turns that journey into something raw and cinematic, covering womanhood, mortality and the strange pull between the physical and the spiritual. The tracklist includes ‘Witch Dance’, ‘Perfume and Milk’ and ‘The Old Religion’.
Next year, Florence + The Machine will tour the album across the UK and Europe, including two nights at London’s O2 Arena and major dates in Belfast, Glasgow, Manchester, Paris and Berlin. Rising singer-songwriter Paris Paloma will support across all eighteen shows.
Since releasing her debut Lungs in 2009, Florence Welch has become one of Britain’s most distinctive performers. Over five albums she has earned multiple number ones in both the UK and US, headlined festivals around the world, and collaborated with artists from The Rolling Stones to Taylor Swift. Her 2018 book Useless Magic collected her lyrics, poetry and artwork, tracing the same themes of faith, love and transformation that continue through her new work.
Everybody Scream is out on Halloween.
