Frieze London has announced the 162 galleries featuring at its fair in Regent’s Park this October. A full list can be found below.
As well as announcing the slate of galleries for 2022, Frieze has reaffirmed its vision for London’s role in the global art world post-Brexit. The commitment comes at a difficult time for the UK art market, with rising interest rates and continued supply chain disruption.
Frieze is the UK’s leading contemporary art fair. The 162 galleries is par for the course – 159 attended in 2021; 160 in 2019 – and as is traditionally the case, galleries younger than 12 years old will stage solo artist presentations in the dedicated ‘Focus’ section.
Frieze’s sister fair, Frieze Masters, will take place on the other side of Regent’s park. It is dedicated to art made before 1980, and will be celebrating its 10th edition come October, featuring 129 exhibitors.
The London fair will arrive just a month after Frieze hosts its inaugural Seoul event (2-5 September), and come just before Art Basel, Frieze’s main competitor, kicks off the first edition of its Paris fair. There is not just a rivalry between Frieze and Art Basel, but also increasingly between London and Paris as the two capitals vie to be the centre of the European art trade.
Eva Langret is Frieze’s new director, after Victoria Siddall stepped down as global director. Langret was previously artistic director, and in announcing the London galleries, she emphasised how the 2022 edition will, “celebrate the cultural life of London, but also showcase its global reach” and reflect “the city’s position as an international centre”.
Still, financially, British art is in a difficult place. The Art Newspaper reports, “stand prices in the main section are now £540 per sq. m, compared to £524 in 2021, representing a 3% increase. Prices for the Focus section range between £248 to £348 per sq. m.”
On top of this, interest rates are expected to hit two per cent by next year, as the Bank of England attempts to control soaring inflation, which is presently at its highest mark in forty years, and the highest of all G7 nations. Langret says that Frieze is “sensitive to the pressures that are affecting everyone” and which the art market is “not immune to.”
