Leeds-based four-piece Fuzz Lightyear have shared a new single, ‘Aberfan’, a stark and moving reflection on one of the darkest days in Welsh history.
The track arrives ahead of their upcoming EP Zero Guilt, due 21st November, which captures the group’s intense live energy under the guidance of producer Alex Greaves.
‘Aberfan’ recalls the 1966 tragedy in which 116 children and 28 adults were killed when a colliery spoil tip collapsed onto the Welsh village below. The disaster, caused by the negligence of the National Coal Board, remains one of Britain’s most haunting examples of institutional failure.
Fuzz Lightyear’s take is not a retelling so much as a meditation – a howl of grief, anger, and remembrance that connects the past to the present.
Frontman Ben Parry, who grew up in the South Wales valleys, explained: “Coming from the South Wales valleys I have always held the story of Aberfan close to my heart. It was the Grenfell of its time, a direct example of working class neglect.”
He continues, “Growing up nearby it always served as a reminder to be wary of the corporate and political class. Maturing into adolescence my friends and I would always remind ourselves of Grenfell, of Tryweryn and Mynydd Epynt to remain skeptical of the British – we are Welsh, not British.”
It’s an unusually political statement for a band best known for their noise-driven catharsis. Yet here, their fury feels channelled through empathy rather than aggression. The song’s layered guitars and taut rhythm carry the tension of memory – not just of what happened in Aberfan, but what still happens when working-class communities are ignored.
The track follows previous singles ‘Animal’ and ‘Reject the Throne’, expanding on Fuzz Lightyear’s reputation as one of the UK’s most uncompromising live acts. The forthcoming Zero Guilt EP promises to push that intensity further while grounding it in storytelling that feels rooted in place and purpose.
Fuzz Lightyear will tour the UK this winter, including a headline date at London’s Lexington on 3rd December.
Zero Guilt is out 21st November.
