The original – and by far the best – Get Carter is arriving back in cinemas with a 4K restoration…

Over the past few weeks, we’ve seen the re-release in cinemas of The Godfather trilogy, to mark five decades since the original movie came out. Also lined up later this year is a 40th birthday cinema outing for Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan. And now the BFI has got in on the act, with the news that it’s bringing a stone cold British movie classic back to cinemas: Get Carter.

Hopelessly remade two decades back with Sylvester Stallone in the lead, the original – and best – features Michael Caine in one of his most famous roles. Directed by Mike Hodges, Caine plays a gangland enforcer on a revenge mission.

Originally released in 1971, the film’s described in the blurb as “arguably the grittiest and greatest of all British crime film”, and there’s at least a good conversation to be had there.

The film is coming back to cinemas across the UK on Friday 27th May 2022, and then the BFI will release the newly-remastered version of the film on Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray on 25th July.

Furthermore, across May it’s putting on a retrospective of Mike Hodges’ movies at the BFI Southbank in London. There’s all sorts on his CV, including Flash Gordon, Croupier, The Terminal Man, Pulp (also with Michael Caine) and Morons From Outer Space, so should be some fun screenings there. A special ‘in conversation’ event is also planned for 3rd May.

Going back to Get Carter, Hodges has personally approved the restoration – that’s used the original 35mm negative of the film – and it’s set to look better than ever when it returns to cinemas. Expect tickets to go on sale shortly.
