Glass Animals have released a bizarre new visualiser for ‘Take A Slice’, one of the standout tracks from their 2016 album How to Be a Human Being, which has found new viral life nearly a decade later.
The video is hosted at a fan experience site, ifuwatchthisustink.net, where it plays differently with each viewing.
Built by frontman Dave Bayley and bandmate Drew MacFarlane, the project pulls from real-time internet randomness. It’s glitchy, confrontational, and entirely on-brand for a band that’s made digital absurdity part of their aesthetic. “If you watch this, u stink,” the site warns, before loading a distorted, fan-fed hallucination that mutates every time you hit refresh.
The resurgence of ‘Take A Slice’ has been powered by a new TikTok trend, “watching your enemy’s downfall”, which has pushed the track to over 2 million daily views. One Minecraft-themed video alone has racked up more than 17 million. Despite being nearly eight years old, the track is now officially their second-biggest song, after ‘Heat Waves’.
To mark the moment, Glass Animals took over New York’s Scarr’s Pizza, handing out slices and posting cryptic lyrics around the shop. It’s the kind of surreal, fan-forward gesture that’s become typical of the band, whose relationship with their audience is increasingly shaped by these digital drops and IRL stunts.
‘Take A Slice’ may not be new, but its revival comes off the back of I Love You So F**ing Much*, their fourth studio album, released last year. That record took the band into more sci-fi-leaning, existential territory, blending pop, surrealism and emotional directness. It followed the huge success of Dreamland, which sold over 12 million copies and produced the global hit ‘Heat Waves’, making Glass Animals the first UK band in nearly 30 years to top the Billboard Hot 100.
They’re currently touring across North America, with festival stops at Governors Ball, Bonnaroo and Mad Cool, as well as headline shows at venues including the Stone Pony in New Jersey. More surprises are expected, both online and off.
