The Batman game had already been announced for Playstation 4 and Xbox One, but will now only be released on PS5 and Xbox One X/S as well as PC.

If you were looking forward to playing Gotham Knights, this year’s big Batman universe title, but haven’t been able to get a next-gen console such as PS5 due to the chip shortages, you’re probably feeling pretty devastated right about now.

The game, which had already been confirmed for older consoles, will now only release on the newer consoles which are in high demand, but simply can’t meet it.

It’s only natural that, eventually, older consoles won’t be getting the newest titles. After all, the hardware is older and the games simply won’t run as smoothly on them. Cyberpunk 2077 struggled with exactly this issue.

Such is the circle of life, but the chip shortages make the Gotham Knights announcement particularly worrisome. While Sony reported that they have sold 19.3 million PS5 units, supply still isn’t meeting demand and there doesn’t seem to be any relief for this expected in the near future.

This effectively makes Gotham Knights – and presumably most big titles will follow suit – a game only few lucky ones can play. Those who want to play and are keen to buy a PS5, meanwhile, will only be able to twiddle their thumbs.

Warner Bros., the studio behind Gotham Knights, dropped new gameplay footage for the game and with it came the surprise announcement. The studio claims they want to “to provide players with the best possible gameplay experience”. It’s likely that releasing the game on older consoles would have led to a plethora of technical issues, but it’s still a troubling announcement for gamers.
