Holly Macve has ended 2024 with a new release, a cover of Joni Mitchell’s well-loved track ‘River’. The cover arrives just in time for the holiday season, adding a fresh yet familiar take on the classic. Macve’s rendition is straightforward and sincere, offering a quiet, introspective spin on Mitchell’s bittersweet Christmas ballad.
Speaking about her decision to cover ‘River’, Macve says, “I think Joni won when she wrote this song (along with many others…). I don’t think it’s easy to write a classy Christmas song that is in equal parts sad, beautiful, nostalgic and comforting, but she managed it. I always come back to this song around this time of year and I love to sing it, so it only felt right to share.”
This release follows Macve’s third studio album, Wonderland, which she released in October through her own label, Loving Memory Records. Wonderland marks a shift in Macve’s approach to her music, as it is the first album she has fully controlled creatively. The record also comes after a period of significant personal change for the artist, including a car accident in Los Angeles that gave her a new perspective on life. “When you go through experiences like that, it gives you a whole new perspective on life,” Macve reflects.
Looking ahead, Macve has announced a UK and Ireland tour for spring 2025. Tickets for the tour are now available. The full list of dates is as follows:
