Jack Kaye, vocalist and guitarist of Brighton-formed indie pop band The Magic Gang, has shared his debut solo single ‘Dora’ via Fascination Street Records, out now.
The Magic Gang released two celebrated studio albums, their self-titled debut in 2018 and Death of the Party in 2020, building a devoted following through Beach Boys-influenced vocal harmonies, sharp melodic instincts and an energetic live show that culminated in a sold-out headline at London’s Roundhouse. The band dissolved in 2024, leaving Kaye to recalibrate and work out who he was as a songwriter outside of that framework.
The process was not straightforward. “I had writer’s block for a long time after the band broke up,” he has said. “Wheels were spinning; I was trying to figure out what I was even doing musically. So I decided to take myself out of my own head. I started to write this song, loosely based on a friend’s relationship. Once I got into that storytelling mindset, it became fun again and everything flowed.”
The result is a slinky, soulful piece of indie pop, both whimsical and quietly touching. A video directed by Josh Cray accompanies the single. Kaye made an under-the-radar appearance at The Great Escape recently and will headline The George Tavern in London on 9th September.
