Jawdropped have announced their debut album Secret to Spare, due 18th September via Transgressive Records and Canvasback, alongside new single ‘Split Lip’.
The Los Angeles four-piece, Roman Zangari, Kyra Morling, Sean Edwards and Cook Lee-Chobanian, built the album across spare days and weekends throughout 2025, in the gaps between a busy touring schedule and their respective day jobs. It is the first time the band have written songs together in a room from the ground up: self-produced to capture the unfiltered energy of their live shows, with engineer work from Colin Knight and a mixdown from Alex Farrar, whose credits include MJ Lenderman and Waxahatchee.
The reference points are impeccable: the Lemonheads’ country-pop sprawl, Paul Westerberg’s wizened raucousness, and the crunchy hooks of Teenage Fanclub and Dinosaur Jr. processed through the particular seediness that runs beneath Los Angeles sunshine. “We wanted to make music that felt like Los Angeles,” Zangari has said. “Under the sunshine and brightness, there’s this seedier, melancholy, darker aspect. We’re trying to carve out our own niche in that vein.”
‘Split Lip’, the album’s lead single, tackles the particular tension of being in a band that is simultaneously going somewhere and going nowhere. “You spend your whole life as a musician striving for success and hoping to experience all these things that the four of us were experiencing for the first time,” Zangari has said. “This song weighs out the excitement of that with the underwhelming reality of it all: we’re still broke, there’s no guarantee that any of this is going to lead to anything.” A previous single ‘Monday’ earned coverage from Pitchfork, Stereogum, So Young and The Line of Best Fit.
The band play Pitchfork London on 2nd November and Pitchfork Paris on 7th November as part of a European run in October and November.
