Lava La Rue turns overheard conversations into a shoplifting chase on ‘Prince of Bologna’

London artist Lava La Rue has released new single ‘Prince of Bologna’, the follow-up to recent EP Do You Know Everything (D.Y.K.E).

The track was recorded for Speedy Wunderground’s long-running singles series, produced in a single quick session by label head Dan Carey. Carey first saw Lava La Rue perform at Latitude Festival in 2021 and had wanted to make a record with them ever since; it took five years for the two to get into the studio together.

‘Prince of Bologna’ was built alongside Tomasso Medica of Husky Loops, its lyrics pieced together from snippets of overheard conversation. The track keeps its production raw, leaning into a more urgent, alt-leaning side of Lava La Rue’s writing.

The single is out now digitally, with a seven-inch vinyl release following on 30 July.

Lava La Rue also directed the accompanying video themselves, working from the idea that “it’s better to beg for forgiveness than to ask for permission,” shooting a shoplifting chase on camcorder across the streets and rooftops of Brighton. Local parkour practitioners Ziggi and Mitchy helped scout the rooftop locations used in the shoot.
