Lime Garden have announced details of their second album, Maybe Not Tonight, due later this year.
The record follows the band’s 2024 debut One More Thing and is introduced today by lead single ‘23’. Written from the perspective of a conversation with her younger self, the track finds vocalist and guitarist Chloe Howard reflecting on ambition, self-criticism and the uneasy space between confidence and doubt.
“‘23’ was born from a dream I had where I was talking to my younger self,” Howard explains. “In the dream I was essentially ripping into my own personality and lack of success. The song itself came together on a rainy January afternoon, with a Happy Mondays-inspired jam paving the way for the bassline.”
Produced by Charlie Andrew, with additional production input from drummer Annabel Whittle, Maybe Not Tonight leans further into Lime Garden’s dancefloor instincts while retaining the sharp emotional edge that defined their debut. Across the album, the band cite influences ranging from Bon Iver and A.G. Cook to Scissor Sisters and Lily Allen, folding pop immediacy into their post-punk foundations.
Lyrically, the record centres on self-examination rather than deflection. Howard describes the album as a process of confronting uncomfortable truths and reclaiming the sense of certainty that first drove the band to make music together.
“Part of the ethos of the record is about addressing, rather than ignoring, all the shitty things you’ve done,” she says. “By making this record, we’ve come back to what it felt like when we started the band. When we were 17 and thought we were the shit, and nobody could tell us different. We’ve got this fresh feeling that we deserve to be here.”
Maybe Not Tonight sees Lime Garden balancing reflection with release, pairing introspective songwriting with music built to move bodies as much as minds.
