Lykke Li announces new album The Afterparty with defiant single ‘Lucky Again’

Lykke Li has announced details of her new album The Afterparty, a project she describes, with typical provocation, as “Ram Dass for fuckboys”.

For context, Ram Dass was an American spiritual teacher and author who became a key figure in the 1960s counterculture. Best known for his book Be Here Now, he blended Eastern philosophy, particularly Hindu and Buddhist thought, with Western self-exploration. His teachings centred on ego dissolution, presence, compassion and what he termed the “higher self”. By invoking his name, Li is consciously drawing on the language of spiritual awakening, then subverting it.

More than a decade into her career, Li is positioning The Afterparty as a break from the romantic obsession that defined much of her earlier work. “I was twirling around in love addiction for all those albums,” she reflects. “Now I’m going into my existential era.” Rather than transcendence, this record promises confrontation, the raw mechanics of desire and insecurity laid bare.

The album is previewed by new single ‘Lucky Again’, a dark-pop surge built around fatalism and defiance. Over a brooding arrangement, she sings: “Lord I don’t know how, and I can’t say when, If we’re lucky, we’ll get lucky again.”

She frames the track as “samsara in a song. The wheel of life; winning, losing, living, dying. Having had something and praying you’ll have it again. Whether it’s sex, money, vitality, love.” The spiritual reference is deliberate, but so is the abrasion. This is not enlightenment as serenity. It is enlightenment dragged through ego, lust and regret.
