Makeshift Art Bar have announced their new EP Marionette, set for release on 26th June via Heist or Hit, alongside new single ‘Chocolate’.
The Belfast group step into a new phase with the release, with Makeshift Art Bar Chocolate single offering a dense, confrontational introduction to their next chapter.
Folding post-punk into grunge, electronica and art rock, the quartet have quickly built a reputation as one of the more uncompromising new voices in the underground. Signing to Heist or Hit, the label behind artists such as Westside Cowboy and Her’s, marks a clear step forward.
‘Chocolate’ captures that intensity. Opening with a restless, elastic synth line, the track spirals into a clash of jagged guitars and forceful percussion, before collapsing into something more chaotic and disorientating. It’s a piece that leans heavily into contrast, tension and release.
Lyrically, the band frame the song around isolation and surrender, pushing the idea of loneliness beyond retreat and into something more consuming.
“Choosing loneliness is something we all relate to. In ‘Chocolate’, loneliness is less of an escape and more of a surrender,” the band explain. “This is a descent into a cave of madness, and the deeper we go, the harder it is to hear the voice of clarity at the surface.”
Produced by Daniel Fox, the single follows their 2025 debut EP Lackluster Writing Makes Fundamental Reading, and arrives with early momentum, including support from BBC Radio 6 Music.
Makeshift Art Bar will support Chalk on a European tour this month, alongside a run of headline shows in Dublin and Derry, before a slot with Just Mustard at Dublin’s 3Olympia.
Marionette lands on 26th June.
