Mary In The Junkyard have shared new single ‘New Muscles’, the latest preview of their debut album Role Model Hermit, due 3rd July via AMF Records.
Where previous single ‘Candelabra’ was a stripped-back solo piece from Clari Freeman-Taylor, ‘New Muscles’ operates at the opposite end of the band’s register: light, wry and driven by a melody that lodges immediately. It was initially written on accordion and is, by the band’s own description, about David joining a gym.
The video was co-directed by Saya Barbaglia alongside collaborators Luke Grieve and Daisy Ayscough, and centres on a fight between Freeman-Taylor and Barbaglia. The combat is real. Freeman-Taylor trained Muay Thai for a month; Barbaglia trained for a year. “The fight in the video is real and we trained for it for a combined year,” the pair have confirmed.
Role Model Hermit was produced by Oli Bayston and Ben Baptie and is out 3rd July.
