Mary in the Junkyard have announced their debut album Role Model Hermit, set for release on 3rd July via AMF Records.
The London trio have built a reputation as a compelling live act, combining post-punk textures with intricate, math-leaning rhythms, while retaining a clear instinct for melody. Their first full-length release arrives after a period of steady momentum, positioning them as one of the more distinctive voices in the current UK landscape.
Role Model Hermit is described by the band as a collection rooted in memory and transformation. “It’s full of stories, memories and past lives,” they explain. “We want it to be something that you can get lost in, like a forest or a cave, where you can shelter inside for a while to rest and recover.”
New single ‘Crash Landing’ offers an early insight into that world. Built around low, resonant harmonium tones, the track leans into a loose, expressive vocal style that recalls the off-kilter delivery of Life Without Buildings, while maintaining a sense of clarity and forward motion.
Vocalist Clari-Freeman Taylor says the song emerged during a period of experimentation on tour. “We fell in love with the warm low drones of the harmonium,” she explains. “At the time we were listening a lot to Life Without Buildings, so I think I was channelling some chirpy, scattered poetry when we were jamming. This one is really joyful for me, it is all about change and growth.”
The track arrives alongside a video directed by Maisy Banks and Jacob Ray, further extending the band’s visual identity.
With Role Model Hermit, Mary in the Junkyard set out a debut that prioritises atmosphere and immersion, balancing structural complexity with an underlying emotional clarity.
Role Model Hermit is released on 3rd July.
