BAFTA Rising Star Award-winner Michael Ward features heavily in the new trailer, which sees Olivia Coleman confronting isolation and a love of cinema in the latest trailer for Sam Mendes’ new film. Check it out below: As well as showing off its star-studded cast (Coleman and Ward are joined by Colin Firth and Toby Jones) the trailer also gives us a taste of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ score for the film, their second this year after their exemplary work on Luca Guadagnino’s Bones and All. Meanwhile, Mendes’ regular collaborator Roger Deakins also looks to be back on fine form, with a shot of a quite lovely-looking fireworks show showing Brighton in all its glory. Though we weren’t entirely taken with the film first time round, calling it “one of the most emotionally confusing films in recent memory,” the new trailer actually looks quite sweet, delving into everything from the decline of a once-great cinema to racism on the streets of Brighton. Empire of Light is due to hit cinemas on 9 January 2023, in the wake of a tricky time for more grown-up movies which has seen films like MeToo drama She Said struggle to make a dent compared to more general audience fare.
