Modern Woman have signed to One Little Independent and announced their debut album Johnny’s Dreamworld.
The band began as the songwriting project of Sophie Harris before expanding into a four-piece, now completed by David Denyer, Juan Brint-Gutiérrez and Adam Blackhurst. After releasing their debut EP Dogs Fighting In My Dream in 2021, Modern Woman built momentum through festival appearances at End of the Road, Latitude, The Great Escape and Green Man.
Their first album-length statement arrives alongside new single ‘Dashboard Mary’, the band’s first release since 2023’s ‘Achtung’. Harris describes the track as a reflection on the aftermath of excess, written with a cinematic structure in mind and centred on the disorientation of the morning after.
The accompanying video, directed by Harris, was shot on 16mm film across multiple locations including Iceland, the south coast of England, London and the Barbican. The visuals follow a dreamlike narrative, moving between places as if the protagonist is waking up inside different states of consciousness.
Produced by Joel Burton, Johnny’s Dreamworld brings together elements of post-punk, folk and more experimental forms, with Harris citing a deliberate interest in tension and contrast across the record. Vocal reference points include Björk, Sinéad O’Connor and Cat Power, though the album is positioned as a collective work shaped by the band’s mixed backgrounds and playing styles.

Modern Woman will support Ezra Furman on her upcoming UK and European tour, beginning in Vienna before dates across mainland Europe and the UK, concluding at London’s O2 Forum Kentish Town.
