Yorkshire folk artist Natalie Wildgoose has signed with state51 distribution and released her new single ‘In The North’, her first new music since the Come Into The Garden EP earlier this year.

The song is anchored in family history. Speaking about its origins, Natalie says: “My mother’s side of the family is from Yorkshire, and I spent lots of time playing in the dales at the foot of the hills near our house. We had a huge amount of freedom as kids, swimming in the rivers and hiding in the woods.

“The song was recorded nearby, in a chapel that’s hosted friends’ weddings and funerals. I wrote it while thinking about the loss of my grandad. The sentiment is that people don’t fully disappear. They stay present in the places we grew up.”

Wildgoose has been gradually building her name over the past two years. Her 2023 debut album CEREBRUM picked up early attention for its stripped-back approach and plainspoken writing. She followed it with the 2025 EP Come Into The Garden, recorded largely in Yorkshire using local pianos and her grandfather’s old reel-to-reel tape machine.

In interviews, she has spoken about wanting to keep her process simple and avoiding the pressure to shape her work around social media trends or industry demands.

She splits her time between Yorkshire and London, often recording in rural spaces and favouring analogue methods. Her work draws on folk, minimal chamber arrangements and the practical rhythms of everyday life rather than high-concept narratives.

Much of her writing returns to family, landscape, loss and memory, but without the decorative language that often surrounds modern folk releases.

‘In The North’ continues that line of work: a straightforward song written close to home, built on personal experience, and released as the first step in her new partnership with state51.

‘In The North’ is out now via state51 Distribution.
