Nell Mescal has released her second EP, The Closest We’ll Get, out today. The 22-year-old Irish singer-songwriter also begins her slot supporting HAIM on their UK tour tonight, before starting her own headline tour in November, which includes London’s Islington Assembly Hall on 19th November.

The six-track record follows her 2024 debut Can I Miss It For A Minute? and continues her focus on relationships, communication and emotional honesty. “It’s a collection of songs that tell a story about two people and how their relationship is in the grey area of friends or lovers,” Mescal says. “Each song is a realisation of how sitting in the in-between affected me and in turn affected the friendship.”

Opening track ‘Middle Man’ captures that theme directly. She asks her subject to confront the truth before anyone gets hurt: “Come on, be brutal, cut out the middle man.” Across the record, Mescal reflects on the gap between what is said and what is felt, writing with clear, deliberate language and little disguise.

The EP was produced by Philip Weinrobe, known for his work with Adrienne Lenker, Billie Marten and Cass McCombs. His production keeps the focus on Mescal’s vocals and lyrics, giving the songs a plain but striking intimacy. At 24 minutes, The Closest We’ll Get is concise and self-contained, each song part of a larger story about connection, hesitation and the cost of clarity.

Mescal’s writing remains grounded in personal experience, but this release shows more control and structure than her debut. The songs are cleanly arranged, and her voice carries a steadiness that matches the writing. What emerges is not reinvention but refinement – the sound of an artist sharpening what she already does well.

She will tour across the UK through November following the HAIM dates, closing a year that has seen her move from promising newcomer to a regular name on festival and tour line-ups.
