The Royal Danish Library has brought Stranger Than Kindness: The Nick Cave Exhibition back to life as a virtual experience, now available worldwide. First shown in Copenhagen in 2020, the exhibition opens today in a new interactive format with an audio guide recorded by Nick Cave.
The original exhibition gathered more than 300 items from across Cave’s creative and personal life, presented as large-scale installations co-designed by Cave himself. It mixed biography, autobiography and fiction, and was widely praised during its original run. After debuting at The Black Diamond in Copenhagen, it travelled to Montreal in 2022.
The new digital version recreates the physical exhibition through an ultra high-resolution 3D scan. Visitors can move freely around the space, zoom into objects, and explore a large archive of material including letters, photographs, artwork, audio, video and newly created pieces. The audio guide, recorded in 2025 by Cave in conversation with co-curator Christina Back, gives additional context as users navigate the space. The original soundscapes by Cave and Warren Ellis are also included.
The virtual exhibition was created with MadPixel, the digital studio known for its work with the Museo Nacional del Prado and Château de Versailles. It is built on MadPixel’s Second Canvas platform and aims to give online visitors a close-up experience of the original show through new interactive storytelling tools.
The project marks a new digital push from the Royal Danish Library, expanding access to its cultural work through virtual formats that focus on spatial and sensory detail.
The exhibition is free to explore now at www.thenickcaveexhibition.com.
Alongside the launch, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds have announced Live God, a live album capturing performances from The Wild God Tour in 2024 and 2025.
