Obongjayar has announced his second album Paradise Now, due for release on 30th May, alongside a run of UK tour dates that includes his biggest headline shows to date.
The follow-up to 2022’s Some Nights I Dream of Doors, the new record spans 15 tracks and was written between the UK and Nigeria. It arrives with a sharp new single, ‘Sweet Danger’ – a chaotic, rhythmic track the artist describes as a “toxic hoedown”. The song is accompanied by a surreal video, in which Obongjayar is seen leading a parade of erratic characters in a staged showdown.
In keeping with his genre-fluid approach, Paradise Now promises a collision of West African groove, avant-pop production, and lyrics that pull no punches. The record was first teased last year during a series of intimate shows at London’s Ormside Projects, where new material was debuted in stripped-back form. Obongjayar has since described the album as “sugar that coats the medicine,” combining sharp commentary with infectious energy.
A four-date UK tour will follow the album’s release, beginning in Bristol on 22nd November and finishing at London’s O2 Kentish Town Forum on the 26th. The shows mark a significant step up in venue size and visibility for the artist, who has steadily built a reputation for bold, emotionally-charged live performances.
Paradise Now is out 30th May.
