Iceland’s finest are back. Five years since their last release, Of Monsters and Men have returned with a new single, ‘Television Love’, a song rooted in reflection and the slow passing of time.
The track, written and recorded in their studio in Iceland, sees the band picking up a conversation they’ve been quietly having behind closed doors for half a decade. “At its core, ‘Television Love’ is a conversation between two people stretched across time,” they said. “Each time we returned to it, we had something new to add. Life happens, things change, hopelessness turns into hope.”
The accompanying video, shot entirely on 35mm film by director Erlendur Sveinsson, captures that same sense of emotion. Filmed across a single Icelandic summer night, it shows the band seated around a dinner table that drifts through changing scenes, moods and eras – never fully anchored in one place. Thanks to the midnight sun, they were able to shoot through the early hours without ever losing the light.
“We wanted the video to feel timeless,” they explained. “Filming during the solstice gave us this strange sense of calm, chaos and continuity that perfectly fit the song.”
Of Monsters and Men’s debut album My Head Is An Animal (2011) transformed them from Reykjavík indie darlings to global heavyweights almost overnight. The runaway success of ‘Little Talks’ saw them topping charts and racking up over a billion streams on Spotify. They made their U.S. TV debut on Saturday Night Live in 2013, followed by Beneath the Skin (2015), which reached No.3 on the Billboard 200 and featured in Game of Thrones.
Their sweeping, cinematic sound has also featured in The Hunger Games, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, and festival sets at Coachella, Glastonbury and Lollapalooza have cemented them as a true live powerhouse.
Today, they’re streaming to over 9 million listeners each month on Spotify, and with a new album due later this year, the next chapter is about to unfold.
We’ll be speaking to the band very soon – stay tuned for more.
