Three years on from Good Lies, Overmono return with their most ambitious album yet, inspired by Simon Reynolds and a cult Birmingham band nobody else would have thought to sample.

Overmono have announced their second album Pure Devotion, due 7th August via XL Recordings, alongside new single ‘Lockup’.

The follow-up to 2023’s Good Lies establishes brothers Tom and Ed Russell as one of the defining dance music acts of the decade. In the years since their debut, they have collaborated with Fred again.. and Lil Yachty, remixed High Contrast and The Streets, and taken their Pure Devotion live show around the world, selling out Alexandra Palace and playing Glastonbury.

The album was made with a philosophy of capturing the physical space of their studio rather than polishing it away. Sounds were tracked through a Tannoy speaker in the basement and run through a 1930s train station announcement speaker. A cymbal was oven-baked in coffee grounds, crisps and vinegar, a technique borrowed from producer Sylvia Massy.

“For us, making music has always been about having fun,” Tom and Ed have said. “A never ending process of exploring new ways of making tunes. Forever learning, always trying to get better.”

‘Lockup’ opens the album and was inspired by Simon Reynolds’ post-punk history Rip It Up and Start Again, the duo sampling cult Birmingham act Fast Relief’s ‘What a Waste’ in the process.

The eleven-track album also features poet John Joseph Holt on ‘Knight In Shining Prada’, Kindora on ‘Even Angels Ghost’ and ‘Ballad’ (the latter alongside Rock Floyd), and Ruthven on ‘Gem Lingo (ovr now)’. Artwork is by long-time collaborator Rollo Jackson.

Overmono play the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich on 7th August, the same evening the album drops, with further dates across the summer.
