Pencil’s latest single 'Silent Corners' builds tension like a dance track before collapsing under its own weight. Their debut EP Bohemian Clutter follows in May.

London five-piece Pencil have announced their debut EP Bohemian Clutter, set for release on 9th May.

The band have also shared ‘Silent Corners’, a track that builds from eerie beauty to something far more unsettling.

Blurring the line between dreamlike elegance and creeping dread, ‘Silent Corners’ draws from the novel Steppenwolf, which also provides the EP’s title.

“It’s the sound of something beautiful turning into something terrifying,” the band explain. “A meditation on what might lurk beneath the surface. We wanted the song to unfold the way a dance track might, constantly growing and gaining momentum, before eventually collapsing in on itself.”

Pencil have been steadily gaining momentum over the past year, bringing a sense of romanticism and melody back to the indie scene. Their reputation as an enthralling live act has been cemented by performances at Green Man, The Great Escape, and tours with The Japanese House. Now, with three releases behind them, they’re set to take the next step with Bohemian Clutter, a six-track EP exploring the hazy space between reality and fantasy.

Produced with Polly Mackey (Art School Girlfriend) and mixed by Luciano Rossi (Mui Zyu), ‘Silent Corners’ follows previous singles that have earned them support from BBC 6 Music (Deb Grant, Tom Ravenscroft, Marc Riley, Gideon Coe) and praise from Clash, DIY, Dork, The Line of Best Fit, So Young, and Rough Trade.

With their debut EP on the horizon, Pencil are gearing up for a busy summer, including festival appearances at Dot to Dot and a headline show at The Waiting Room in London. Bohemian Clutter arrives on 9th May via State51.
