Primal Scream’s Come Ahead remixes continue with Pet Shop Boys’ take on ‘Innocent Money’

Primal Scream’s Come Ahead remix project continues with a Pet Shop Boys rework of ‘Innocent Money’, and Neil Tennant hops on vocals.

Primal Scream’s Come Ahead remix project just got a shot of synth-pop class, courtesy of Pet Shop Boys, who have reworked ‘Innocent Money’ with their signature touch, plus a surprise guest vocal from Neil Tennant himself.

Bobby Gillespie had a hunch this would work. “When we were discussing possible remixers for the Come Ahead album with our producer David Holmes, I had a gut feeling that asking the Pet Shop Boys to remix ‘Innocent Money’ might be a good idea,” he said. “I felt that the song’s marriage of a socially conscious lyric sung over an ecstatic, discofied, string-laden stomping rhythm track might appeal to Neil and Chris’s sense of pop aesthetics.”

That instinct paid off, with Tennant not only reworking the track but adding his unmistakable voice alongside Gillespie’s. “An added and unexpected fabulous bonus was that Neil sang on it and I get to duet with him. Neil, of course, having one of THE iconic British pop voices. Truly honoured!”

Come Ahead keeps rolling

The remix follows a string of reworkings from Come Ahead, Primal Scream’s acclaimed 12th studio album, including Tim Goldsworthy’s take on ‘Ready To Go Home’ and Black Science Orchestra’s remix of ‘Love Insurrection’. Terry Farley and Wade Teo even dropped a white label remix of ‘Ready To Go Home’, 35 years after Farley helped shape Primal Scream’s sound with his classic ‘Loaded’ and ‘Come Together’ mixes.

Released in November 2024, Come Ahead was hailed as one of Primal Scream’s finest. MOJO declared it “up there with Primal Scream’s best,” while Record Collector called it “an album by a band which has been audibly reborn.”

Now, they’re taking that energy back on the road.
