Princess Diaries 3 is officially in the works, but the question in everyone’s mind is, will Anne Hathaway reprise her role as Mia Thermopolis?
The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that a second sequel to 2001’s iconic The Princess Diaries is in the works at Disney.
The film will be a continuation of the story started in the original film and its 2004 sequel Princess Diaries 2: The Royal Engagement rather than a reboot of the franchise.
Both films were directed by Garry Marshall, who sadly passed away in 2016. The new film doesn’t have a director attached yet but we do know Aadrita Mukerji is penning the script, while Debra Martin Chase, who produced the first two Princess Diaries films, returns to produce the third.
But the question is, will Anne Hathaway or Julie Andrews return for their roles as Princess Mia and Queen Clarisse respectively?
Neither has signed on officially yet, but Hathaway has expressed enthusiasm for another sequel.
“I would more than entertain it, I’m pulling for it,” Hathaway told Entertainment Tonight as recently as October 2022. “If there’s any way to get Julie Andrews involved, I think we would make it work.
Andrews, however, isn’t quite as keen.
“I think it would be too late to do it now,” the actress told The Hollywood Reporter in June. Andrews also mentioned there was talk of a sequel many years ago that never came to fruition.
The Princess Diaries 3 doesn’t have a release date yet. If you’re itching for a little Anne Hathaway fix in the meantime, her new film Armageddon Time will be in cinemas November 18.
