Richard Ashcroft has announced his seventh solo album, Lovin’ You, due 3rd October (pre-order here). It’s his first full-length release of new material since 2018’s Natural Rebel, and lands as he joins Oasis on their much-hyped stadium reunion tour, starting this Friday in Cardiff.
The album’s lead single, ‘Lover’, is already picking up national airplay. Built around a reworking of Joan Armatrading’s ‘Love and Affection’, it earned her blessing: “I love how he’s used my song and I love his song.”
Described as a record that spans Ashcroft’s usual mix of lush acoustic ballads and big-sky indie anthems, Lovin’ You also touches on Americana, soul and even a hint of glitchy electronica. Lyrically, it’s centred on intimacy, on love, loss, and quiet encouragement for those facing life’s tougher moments.
Ashcroft wrote the album himself and co-produced it with long-time collaborator Chris Potter and Emre Ramazanoglu. Mirwais, known for his work with Madonna, joins on co-writing and production duties for one track, ‘I’m A Rebel’.
Lovin’ You will be released on digital, CD, and black vinyl, with exclusive coloured variants available from his store (neon orange), Amazon (regular orange) and select indie shops (blue).
Ashcroft’s solo career has seen five Top 5 albums and a #1 debute with Alone With Everybody, following his success fronting The Verve on Urban Hymns, still one of the UK’s best-selling albums, home to ‘Bitter Sweet Symphony’ and ‘The Drugs Don’t Work’.
The new record arrives midway through a major run of summer stadium dates with Oasis, who he first toured with before they broke in the mid-90s. Their mutual respect has lasted for decades.
