South London artist Sam Akpro is set to release his debut album Evenfall on 28th March 2025 via ANTI-. The album promises to introduce a distinctive sound, combining elements of post-punk, shoegaze, and dub in a way that is entirely his own.
The title track, ‘Evenfall’, is available now, offering a first look at the album’s vibe. With swirling guitars, a steady beat, and Akpro’s signature vocals, the song evokes themes of transition and anticipation. As Akpro puts it, the track exists “somewhere between a before and after space in time, where moments have passed and where events are yet to take place.”
Accompanying the release is a video directed by Pedro Takahashi, who previously worked with Akpro on the MVA-nominated ‘Death By Entertainment’. The video captures the song’s mood of introspection against the backdrop of a busy city, with Takahashi noting, “‘Evenfall’ is a culmination of all the videos Sam and myself have collaborated on. The idea is to express that if you pick out any individual in this city of millions, you’ll find that everyone has their own grand internalised life.”
Evenfall features a range of sounds, from the driving urgency of ‘Death By Entertainment’ to the swaggering rhythms of ‘Chicago Town’ and the dub-heavy groove of ‘City Sleeps’. With a strong backing band – Cameron Jacobs (guitar), Joshua Lee (guitar), Luke Chin-Joseph (bass), Kyle Creaton (drums), and Taylor Devenny (sampler, keys) – and co-production from Akpro and Shrink, the album showcases a variety of influences while staying true to Akpro’s unique vision.
Akpro has already attracted attention from press outlets like The Times, DIY, and The Line of Best Fit. Radio support from BBC 6 Music’s Mary Anne Hobbs and BBC Radio 1’s Jack Saunders has pushed his music even further, while live shows at festivals such as Green Man and Pitchfork Paris have solidified his reputation.
With Evenfall, Sam Akpro is set to establish himself as one of the most exciting new talents in the UK music scene.
Evenfall will be released on 28th March 2025.
