Sarah Julia have announced their debut album The Fear That This Is Real, set for release on 9th October.

The Amsterdam-based alt-folk duo have steadily built momentum through a run of understated releases, pairing delicate arrangements with emotionally precise songwriting. Their first full-length record expands that approach, shaped by both collaboration and a deliberate change of environment.

Working with GRAMMY-nominated producer Phil Weinrobe, the pair travelled to Woodstock in upstate New York, where the Sarah Julia debut album took shape. The setting informs the sound, with echoes of classic American songwriting traditions surfacing across the material.

There are faint traces of Joni Mitchell and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, but the focus remains firmly on the duo’s own perspective, rooted in their shared experience as sisters.

“That would mean that we would both feel it, and we want to make sure that we both feel equal in this project,” Sarah explains. “Before writing the songs for this album, we knew it would be more of our own worlds.”

That balance gives the record its emotional clarity, with each song emerging from a place of mutual understanding while retaining a sense of individuality.

New single ‘Conversation’ offers a first insight into the project. Its analogue warmth and restrained instrumentation allow the duo’s harmonies to take centre stage, lending the track a timeless, almost weightless quality.

With The Fear That This Is Real, Sarah Julia present a debut that leans into intimacy and precision, using space and subtlety to draw out the emotional core of their songwriting.
