Succulents warn “be careful what you wish for” on ‘Work It Out’

Succulents have released new single ‘Work It Out’.

The boy-girl duo, formed by Laurie Hulme and Lucy Ridges, deal in fuzzy, lo-fi indie pop with a strong C86 streak, recalling early Belle & Sebastian and the more melodic side of The Moldy Peaches. ‘Work It Out’ runs a tight three minutes, gleeful and almost child-like in its charm, with a melodic sensibility that also brings to mind Swedish indie pop group The Concretes.

The song is about conflict resolution, and more specifically the strange apathy that can set in when surrounded by constant argument, whether that’s protests, politics or toxic exchanges online. The duo have described the song’s protagonist as someone tempted to disengage entirely, while knowing that avoiding conflict doesn’t necessarily make it go away. They’ve singled out the line “be careful what you wish for” as the song’s most important.
