The Avalanches have shared ‘Every Single Weekend’, a new collaboration with Jamie xx, out now.
The track follows ‘Together’ with Nikki Nair, Jessy Lanza and Prentiss, released two weeks ago as the Australian trio’s first new music since 2020’s We Will Always Love You. Where ‘Together’ pointed towards memory and nostalgia, ‘Every Single Weekend’ goes in a more straightforwardly euphoric direction: a celebration of letting go of the working week and losing yourself in the weekend, built from the same plunderphonic instincts that have defined The Avalanches since Since I Left You.
The song has a longer history than its release date suggests. It originally appeared as an interlude on Jamie xx’s acclaimed 2024 album In Waves, which featured The Avalanches on ‘All You Children’. The two acts have collaborated on three tracks in total, also including ‘Wherever You Go’, a creative relationship that has deepened over the past decade. The Avalanches have been candid about the mutual influence: “His In Colour album reignited our passion for sampling,” they have said, “and this track is all about letting go, forgetting the 9-5 grind and enjoying every single weekend.”
The video, artwork by Jonathan Zawada, continues the Takumi Archives campaign that has accompanied both singles: the cryptic fictional digital archive company whose advertising has been woven into the releases as a retro-futuristic narrative layer.
The Avalanches marked their return last week with a surprise DJ set at London’s OM, going back to back with Yu Su, Nikki Nair and Baalti. A new album appears to be incoming, though nothing has been officially confirmed.
