AI is all the rage right now. We’ve already explored how it affects music and entertainment and the Writers Guild of America are currently striking with AI being one of the key disputes. Filmmakers have always been fascinated by AI and its dangers, but something about The Creator makes it feel very, very timely. The film stars John David Washington, Gemma Chan, Ken Watanabe, newcomer Madeleine Yuna Voyles, and Allison Janney. Check out the first trailer below. The official synopsis reads: “Amid a future war between the human race and the forces of artificial intelligence, Joshua (Washington), a hardened ex-special forces agent grieving the disappearance of his wife (Chan), is recruited to hunt down and kill the Creator, the elusive architect of advanced AI who has developed a mysterious weapon with the power to end the war—and mankind itself. Joshua and his team of elite operatives journey across enemy lines, into the dark heart of AI-occupied territory… only to discover the world-ending weapon he’s been instructed to destroy is an AI in the form of a young child.” It feels like a rarity to get an original film as audacious and striking as The Creator. The production value seems to be off the charts here, but I wonder if we have enough perspective to tackle something as massive as AI with nuance yet. The film boasts a very impressive cast as well. John David Washington is no stranger to high concept sci-fi, having starred in Christopher Nolan’s Tenet in 2020 and we’re very excited to see Allison Janney handle a pretty big gun. The Creator will arrive in cinemas 29 September.
