The Last Dinner Party unveil fiery new single ‘Second Best’ ahead of From The Pyre

The Last Dinner Party have released their new single ‘Second Best’, the latest preview of their second album From The Pyre, due 17th October.

Written by guitarist Emily Roberts, ‘Second Best’ pulls inspiration from Sparks’ angular pop, turning heartbreak into something defiant. The track is about being consumed by someone who will inevitably let you down again – and choosing to stay anyway.

“I wish I could go back and say to myself that I am worth more than that, and that no one needs to accept being second best,” Emily explains. “I hope that the song captures the pain, anger and despair I felt but most importantly the defiance and satisfaction I now have in being able to immortalise this person in a song and to look back on the situation with more maturity.”

The rest of the band each left their stamp on the track, with Abi and Lizzie adding lyrical and melodic flourishes, while Aurora and Georgia elevated it further with keys and bass. The result is a song that distils the band’s collaborative strength as much as its emotional punch.

‘Second Best’ is the third cut to be shared from From The Pyre, following the western-tinged ‘This Is The Killer Speaking’ and the introspective slow-burn of ‘The Scythe’. Recorded with Grammy-winning producer Markus Dravs (Wolf Alice, Florence & The Machine, Björk), the new record is described by the band as darker, rawer, and more rooted in mythic storytelling than their chart-topping debut Prelude to Ecstasy.

“This record is a collection of stories, and the concept of album-as-mythos binds them,” the group explained. “Being ghosted becomes a Western dance with a killer, and heartbreak laughs into the face of the apocalypse. It feels a little darker, more raw and more earthy; it takes place looking out at a sublime landscape rather than seated at an opulent table.”

The Last Dinner Party have also expanded their 2025 tour with new shows in Glasgow, Sheffield and Norwich, alongside two nights at London’s O2 Academy Brixton in December. Their live shows have become the stuff of recent legend, with the band winning two BRIT Awards and selling out venues worldwide since the runaway success of Prelude to Ecstasy.

From The Pyre is released on 17th October via Island Records. ‘Second Best’ is out now.
