The Rolling Stones have fanned the flames of speculation they’re on the verge of announcing a new album, thought to be titled ‘Hackney Diamonds’.
That comes after the band posted an augmented reality video clip of their iconic tongue and lips logo, rising above a New York subway station. The CGI glass comes together to form the emblem so synonymous with the legendary rock band. What’s more, the video is captioned “A new Stones era – Worldwide September 6” and takes users to a Hackney Diamonds website where a timer counts down to 2:30pm next Wednesday, 6 September. Fans are encouraged to ‘Join The World’ and sign up to the mailing list. Likewise, frontman Mick Jagger has posted a graphic to his socials, depicting the same logo fashioned from CGI glass, this time rising from the sea at a virtual beach. Although not yet confirmed, a new album would mark the band’s 24th and their first since 2016’s Blues and Lonesome – a covers album of blues songs. It would also be their first original material since 2005’s A Bigger Bang and the first Stones album since the passing of the band’s late, great drummer Charlie Watts, who died in 2021.

These digital clues aren’t the first suggestions that a new Rolling Stones is on the horizon. Just over a week ago an advert was spotted in the local Hackney Gazette newspaper, which contained reference to some of the band’s all-time classics, via a message that read: “Our friendly team promises you satisfaction. When you say gimme shelter we’ll fix your shattered windows.” What’s more, the font used was the same used for the band’s 1978 Some Girls album, and the www.hackneydiamonds.com website that was provided also encouraged people to sign up to a mailing list – this one belonging to Universal Music, who handles the band’s back catalogue. ‘Hackney Diamonds’ is a slang term for broken glass, typically referring to the shards left on the ground after thieves break into cars and shop windows. We’ll see just what these scattered clues mean when they’re all presumably pieced together after the latest countdown that’s arrived.
