Director Samuel Bodin is making his feature film debut with Cobweb, which arrives in UK cinemas this September. The first trailer promised a uniquely disturbing new horror vision which put Cobweb into every horror fan’s radar. Lionsgate have now released a brand-new and rather unnerving clip from the film, in which Peter’s (Woody Norman) father forces the young boy to go into the basement as a form of punishment after drawing a terrifying picture, disturbing his mother (Lizzy Caplan). Something tells us that the basement, the door for which is hidden behind a fridge, harbours something dark and dangerous…  Watch the ‘He’s Going in the Basement’ clip below.  The official synopsis reads: “Eight-year-old Peter is plagued by a mysterious, constant tap, tap from inside his bedroom wall – a tapping that his parents insist is all in his imagination. As Peter’s fear intensifies, he believes that his parents (Lizzy Caplan and Antony Starr) could be hiding a terrible, dangerous secret and questions their trust. And for a child, what could be more frightening than that?” Cobweb will have its UK premiere at this year’s FrightFest, where it will play on 26 August. The film was released in the US last Friday against Christopher Nolan’s latest epic Oppenheimer and Greta Gerwig’s candy-coloured Barbie.

UK viewers have to wait a few more weeks, but so far, Cobweb has a strong word of mouth. The film currently sits at a respectable 63% critic score and a slightly better 73% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.  The film stars The Boys’ Anthony Starr, Lizzy Caplan and Cleopatra Coleman, who was last seen in Brandon Cronenberg’s uncompromising Infinity Pool. Bodin directed the film from a script by Chris Thomas Devlin. 2023 has been a very strong year for horror so far, especially for completely original films, with A24’s Talk To Me premiering in the UK this week.
