Wyldest (aka Zoë Mead) returns today with the poignant single ‘All It Would Take Is A Phone Call’, an exploration of familial estrangement and the quiet ache of distance. The track follows her acclaimed 2022 album Feed The Flowers Nightmares.
The single marries skeletal guitar lines and airy production with Wyldest’s weightless vocal, channelling the emotional precision of early Cat Power or Sharon Van Etten. Tackling the painful drift of blood ties, the lytics linger: “Now you’re just another memory / Locked away inside my veins…reality gets smaller by the day.”
The self-shot video, filmed by Wyldest on the windswept moors of Connemara, draws an evocative parallel to her theme of fading communication. Inspired by an egg-shaped Marconi monument she discovered there, she reflects: “It was in the middle of nowhere…standing alone as a tribute to Guglielmo Marconi…a great link.”
Wyldest elaborates: “The son is about the loss of communication in relationships…family bonds can…become strangers…this invisible expectation of a bond holds people together, despite the cold reality.” The song reframes blood ties, asking listeners to “open ourselves up to love and care for people whether we were assigned to at birth or not.”
A tender but resolute step forward, the new single marks Wyldest’s evolution as a vital voice in alternative music, fearlessly examining uncomfortable truths with both compassion and clarity.
Wyldest’s journey spans three albums: 2019’s Dream Chaos, 2021’s Monthly Friend, and 2022’s Feed The Flowers Nightmares, all met with acclaim from BBC 6 Music, The Telegraph, NME, and more.
Wyldest will perform at Latitude Festival on 27th July, with more tour dates to be confirmed.
