Damien Chazelle’s Babylon has so far been getting a mixed reaction, but the new featurette shows us the world behind this glitzy Hollywood affair.
In the new featurette, Chazelle and his stars, including Margot Robbie, Diego Calva and Brad Pitt, describe the film and their characters. Chazelle describes Calva’s character Manny as our “guide through the story” and someone who is a “dreamer” as Calva says. Robbie plays a young starlet on the cusp of stardom. Pitt’s character Jack Conrad is, as described by Pitt, the “biggest actor at the top of his game”. Most reviews have praised Robbie’s performance as Nellie. The actress is in high demand; Greta Gerwig’s Barbie is set to be released in the summer. Robbie plays the titular character based on the infamous toy and Ryan Gosling, a Chazelle regular, is playing one version of Ken against her. We’ve still got a couple of months to wait to make up our own minds about the film, but Chazelle’s previous films Whiplash, La La Land and First Man have all been critically acclaimed and Babylon seems like his most ambitious project to date. It’s still very likely that Babylon will be amongst the Oscar contenders this year; Hollywood loves a good film about itself. Babylon arrives in UK screens on January 20, 2023.
