Placebo to unveil new documentary ‘This Search for Meaning’ in September 2024

Placebo The Search For Meaning

Placebo today proudly announce the release of their second feature-length documentary, This Search for Meaning. This intimate and enlightening film explores the themes behind Placebo’s lyrics and subject matter, while charting their evolution as a band and as individuals. It is a fearless, truthful exploration of the creative process and the rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle, along with its inevitable consequences.

Since emerging from obscurity in the 1990s with provocative songs such as ‘Nancy Boy’ and ‘Bruise Pristine’, Placebo has taken an unconventional path through the macho ‘Britpop’ scene, addressing issues like body politics, human rights, societal apathy, and the corruption of those in power. Placebo seemed to be asking questions no one else dared to, challenging listeners to find their own answers.

Instead of presenting a conventional origin story, award-winning Scottish filmmaker Oscar Sansom, known for his pioneering work in music films, captures the band’s ongoing impact and legacy. The documentary is a visual meditation on contemporary themes such as surveillance, culture, sexuality and gender identity, addiction, trauma, and the climate crisis. These themes are explored through new interviews with Brian Molko and Stefan Olsdal, which are both reflective and revealing, highlighting Placebo’s socio-cultural curiosity and ongoing musical journey.

The film also features contributions from notable figures in the arts who admire or have been inspired by Placebo, including Shirley Manson (Garbage), Robbie Williams, Yungblud, Rebecca Lucy Taylor (Self Esteem), Joe Talbot (IDLES), and contemporary artist Stuart Semple. These engaging discussions create a multifaceted, overheard conversation that captures the sense that everyone is trying to find their place in the world.

The narrative is structured around new performances of Placebo’s latest songs from Never Let Me Go, recorded at Britain’s legendary Twickenham Film Studios. It also includes archive footage of the band and exclusive, never-before-seen material spanning their entire career, including their collaboration with David Bowie.

Fans can sign up to receive the latest news about the documentary. This Search for Meaning is set for theatrical release in September 2024.
