Keanu Reeves

The bands Keanu Reeves can’t live without

The actor and musician once listed the bands that defined his early listening.

Keanu Reeves has never quite fitted the mould of a typical Hollywood star. Since breaking through as Ted “Theodore” Logan in 1989’s Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, he has combined a varied acting career with a reputation for being unusually grounded and self-aware.

Alongside roles in films such as My Own Private Idaho, The Matrix and the John Wick series, Reeves has built a public image that feels at odds with the industry’s usual distance. His willingness to engage directly with fans has only reinforced that perception.

Music has long been a central part of that identity. Reeves is a musician as well as an actor, playing bass in alt-rock band Dogstar. The group has maintained a steady presence over the years, releasing records including Our Little Visionary and Somewhere Between the Power Lines and Palm Trees, while continuing to perform live.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly in 1996, as the band prepared to release their debut album, Reeves outlined their approach. “We’re not trying to copy anyone’s sound: We’re doing our own thing,” he said. “Hopefully, people will like it.”

In the same interview, he was asked about the artists that shaped his taste. His answer was direct.

“I’d say Fugazi, The Ramones, Exploited, Discharge, early Elvis Costello, The Clash, Violent Femmes, Joy Division, Minor Threat, and Bad Brains. That’s definitely what I cut my teeth on.”

The list points clearly to a grounding in punk and post-punk, a thread that runs through his musical output. In later years, Reeves has continued to single out Joy Division as a defining influence, naming ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ as a song he could return to indefinitely.
