Three years after Season 5, Variety reports that a new series of Netflix’s dystopian hit Black Mirror is in the works.

It’s all very hush-hush, but casting is now said to be underway for a sixth season. It is understood that it will have more episodes than the last series, which featured just three, and is said to be more “cinematic in scope”. Each episode is being treated as an feature individual film, which is not a major divergence from previous Black Mirror productions, in which episodes often had run times of 60 minutes or more.

The original show creator, Charlie Brooker, expressed doubt about the future of Black Mirror two years ago. He told the Radio Times, “At the moment, I don’t know what stomach there would be for stories about societies falling apart, so I’m not working away on one of those. I’m sort of keen to revisit my comic skill set, so I’ve been writing scripts aimed at making myself laugh.”

Yet it seems societal degradation is again a topic of desire. The new season will be the first since Brooker and creative partner Annabel Jones left their then production company, House of Tomorrow, in January 2020. They swiftly set up Broke and Bones, which received funding from Netflix in a deal that gives the streaming giant control over parts of the company, and could be worth north of $100 million over five years.

The Black Mirror rights did not initially come with Brooker and Jones to Broke and Bones, but Netflix have clearly acquired the licensing to now produce and release their long-awaited sixth season.
