Evil Dead Rise

Lee Cronin’s Evil Dead Rise looks like it might be the biggest horror film of 2023 and the first trailer has just been released. It’s creepy, it’s gory, it’s everything we could want from an Evil Dead film.

Evil Dead Rise isn’t connected to Sam Raimi’s 1981 horror classic The Evil Dead or Fede Álvarez’s underappreciated 2013 reboot. Instead, writer-director Lee Cronin is making a completely independent instalment, but fear not, there will be deadites aplenty.

The first trailer promises a lot of gnarly gore as a cheese grater is used as a weapon and someone gets their scalp taken off. We also see the scene that gave us the very first image of the new film and it’s even creepier than anticipated.

Check out the trailer below.

(Psst. You can watch the scarier, red-band trailer here.)

The official synopsis reads: “In the fifth Evil Dead film, a road-weary Beth pays an overdue visit to her older sister Ellie, who is raising three kids on her own in a cramped L.A. apartment. The sisters’ reunion is cut short by the discovery of a mysterious book deep in the bowels of Ellie’s building, giving rise to flesh-possessing demons, and thrusting Beth into a primal battle for survival as she is faced with the most nightmarish version of motherhood imaginable.”

The infamous Necronomicon, the root of all evil in the Evil Dead franchise, makes a detailed appearance in the trailer as well. It would seem that Ellie’s son somehow gets a hold of it, causing his mother to be possessed by the demons.

Notably, Cronin has also moved the action from the traditional cabin-in-the-woods set-up to a more urban setting.

It all seems very promising. We have a few more months to wait before we’ll see if the film lives up to the epic, terrifying trailer, but we’re very hopeful indeed.

Evil Dead Rise is in cinemas 21 April.
