There’s no stopping IDLES. Fresh off a year packed with critical acclaim, headline sets, and Grammy nominations, the Bristol band have shared a remix of ‘POP POP POP’, featuring none other than Detroit’s rap powerhouse Danny Brown.
The track comes after the two teamed up to debut the remix during their blistering set at Glastonbury’s Other Stage earlier this year. Critics hailed the performance as a festival standout – NME’s glowing 5-star review even suggested IDLES were “making a claim to headline the Pyramid in the future.” Not bad for a band who once labelled themselves as “afternoons-in-the-car-park punk.”
2024 has been a standout chapter in IDLES’ already thrilling story. Their latest album, TANGK, shot to number one in the UK – their second chart-topping record – and earned them three Grammy nominations: Best Rock Album, Best Rock Song, and Best Rock Performance. The band has also been tearing through sold-out venues and festivals worldwide, with sets at Truck, End of the Road, and London’s massive Alexandra Palace.
This year wasn’t just about live shows, either. IDLES hit prime-time screens with performances on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon and Later… with Jools Holland. A particular highlight came when frontman Joe Talbot and guitarist Mark Bowen sat down with legendary Bikini Kill vocalist Kathleen Hanna and TANGK producer Kenny Beats for a deep-dive at The Grammy Museum.
Looking ahead, the band’s 2025 calendar is already shaping up. While IDLES fans in the UK might need to plan ahead, they’ll be treated to two huge homecoming Block Party shows in Bristol’s Queen Square next August – the band’s only UK dates for the year. If this summer’s live energy is anything to go by, those gigs will be essential.
For now, the ‘POP POP POP’ remix feels like a celebration – of a monumental year, an evolving sound, and a band that knows exactly how to mix furious punk with a bit of playful chaos.
