We all know Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse from 2018 might have been the best animated film of the decade. It took animation to exciting new horizons, really pushed the medium with its visual flair and innovative look. Judging from the second trailer for the sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, directors Joaquim Dos Santos (“Avatar: The Last Airbender”), Kemp Powers (“Soul”) and Justin K. Thompson (“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”) are not playing around. Have a look at the mind-bending trailer below. Where do we even start? The signature style of blending traditional animation with a comic-book style is clearly back and hasn’t lost any of its wow-factor. While Disney is busy remaking their own films, Sony Pictures Animation is once again revolutionising the art form. The new trailer gives us a better understanding of the plot. Miles Morales (voiced by Shameik Moore) and Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld), aka Spider Gwen, are pitted against a deadly enemy who threatens to collapse the entire multiverse and all the Spider-Men, Spider-Women and Spider-People in it. We also get a better look at Oscar Isaac’s Spider-Man 2099, who may or may not be a villain here. Miles and 2099 seem to go head to head a few times and Miles is also told “Being a Spider-Man is a sacrifice”, which sounds ominous. The voice cast is rounded out by Brian Tyree Henry as Miles’ dad, Jake Johnson as Peter B. Parker from the first film, Issa Rae as Spider-Woman, Daniel Kaluuya as Spider-Punk and Jason Schwartzman as the Spot.
The film hits cinemas 2 June in the UK.
