Welsh duo Overmono have shared a full live film of their show at London’s Old Royal Naval College, recorded as part of the historic venue’s ambitious summer series.
The sold-out date fell on August 7th, the release day of the duo’s second album, Pure Devotion, via XL Recordings. Named after Overmono’s own live event series, launched in 2024 at venues including Alexandra Palace and Glastonbury’s West Holts stage, the 11-track album marks the most expansive record yet from brothers Tom and Ed Russell.
Where 2023 debut Good Lies came together largely on the road between shows, Pure Devotion was built more deliberately in the studio, written first and produced afterwards. Sessions took the brothers to Iceland, working with just two synthesisers and an FX unit, then to Northern Spain, before finishing at their own studio in Bristol. The record leans heavily on vintage 1970s and ’80s synth hardware and unconventional recording methods, among them a 1930s train station announcement speaker, cymbals roasted in the oven using a technique borrowed from producer Sylvia Massy, and a pair of dummy microphones held close to Ed’s face to capture the vocal on ‘Barum’. The album features contributions from poet John Joseph Holt, Kindora and Ruthven.
Overmono formed in 2015 after Tom and Ed Russell’s earlier solo projects, Tom as Truss and Ed as Tessela, and their brief 2012 collaboration as TR/ER. Since signing to XL Recordings, they’ve become one of the label’s most acclaimed acts, building their live show into one of the most talked-about in electronic music, with 2026 tour dates also including Movement Festival, Primavera Sound, Down the Rabbit Hole and We Love Green.
