Rising Londoner Sophie May has released her new single and video for ‘Brian Cox’, featuring the celebrated physicist himself. This track is part of her upcoming EP, Deep Sea Creatures, set to be released on 26th July via Sound On. Sophie will headline London’s Camden Assembly on 24th July, with additional tour dates supporting Searows later this year.

‘Brian Cox’ sees Sophie reflecting on the vastness of the universe and the daunting concept of the infinite cosmos. Explaining the single, Sophie says, “I wrote ‘Brian Cox’ after listening to Brian Cox talk about black holes and the way they interact with the universe. I felt both awe-inspired and completely terrified. I’ve been a big fan of Brian and his work since I was young, so it only felt right to name the song after him.

“Amazingly, through creating this track, I somehow managed to get the chance to meet him. Very kindly, he re-recorded a snippet of himself talking about the moons of Jupiter, which you can hear in the bridge. Getting to meet him and incorporate his voice into the track felt like an incredible full circle moment where (no pun intended) the stars had aligned.”

The Deep Sea Creatures EP is produced by Chloe Kraemer and Matt Maltese. This follows Sophie’s acclaimed second EP, Worst Thoughts In The World, released last year. Earlier this year, Sophie shared ‘No More Birthdays’, a track written for the sequel to Aardman Animations’ film Chicken Run. This track has garnered over four million views on TikTok and nearly two million streams on Spotify.

Sophie describes her new EP: “My third EP, Deep Sea Creatures, includes 5 tracks that were predominantly written from my bedroom over the past year. Each song leans into all things existential, varying from the overwhelming size of our solar system to the inability to escape your own thoughts. I feel as though these songs are a good representation of the most important factors of my life, my biggest fears, biggest loves, and the appreciation I have for the world around me.”

Last year, Sophie performed at several festivals, including Latitude, Reeperbahn, and Pitchfork Festival in Paris. She also headlined a sold-out show at London’s Omeara and played a series of packed shows in Australia. Sophie has supported Dublin band Inhaler at the Roundhouse and was selected by Rae Morris to perform at a curated show at Groucho.
